The 99 names and why lists differ

Different books and websites list the names a little differently. This is why, in three points.

What the hadith says

Allah has ninety-nine names. Whoever learns them well (ahsaha) will enter Paradise. It gives the number, not the list.

Bukhari 2736 · Muslim 2677

Where the list comes from

The familiar numbered list follows an enumeration in Jami’ at-Tirmidhi. Scholars treat it as a collection made from the Quran and Sunnah.

Tirmidhi 3507

Why books differ

Some lists include “Allah” as the first name, and some put Al-Ahad or another name in its place. We follow the common 99 and show the source for each.

Check each name’s source

What does “ahsaha” ask of us?

The word is often translated as “memorises”. Scholars explain a fuller meaning: learn the names, understand what they mean, and call upon Allah by them and live by them. Ibn al-Qayyim described these levels in Bada’i’ al-Fawa’id. We do not attach any fixed number of repetitions or a promised result to a name, because that is not in the authentic texts.

Read the names correctly, with a teacher

These names are in Arabic. If you or your child cannot yet read them, a live one-to-one teacher can help you read each name with the right sounds.

The 99 Names of Allah: your questions

What are the 99 Names of Allah?

They are the beautiful names (Asma ul Husna) by which Allah describes Himself in the Quran and the Sunnah, such as Ar-Rahman (The Most Gracious), Ar-Raheem (The Most Merciful) and Al-Malik (The King). Sahih al-Bukhari 2736 and Sahih Muslim 2677 say that Allah has ninety-nine names.

Does the hadith list all 99 names?

No. The hadith in Bukhari and Muslim tells us there are ninety-nine names but does not list them. The familiar numbered list comes from an enumeration in Jami’ at-Tirmidhi 3507. Scholars regard the enumeration as a collection, and different books list the names a little differently.

Why do the lists differ?

Because the hadith gives the number and not the names. Scholars collected the names from the Quran and the Sunnah, so the exact set, the order and the English wording vary. On this page every name has its source, so you can see where it comes from.

Does Allah have only 99 names?

Many scholars explain that the hadith does not say Allah has no other names. It says that ninety-nine of them carry the promise for the one who learns them well. Read the explanation by scholars such as Ibn Uthaymeen in al-Qawa’id al-Muthla.

What does “ahsaha” mean in the hadith?

The word is often translated as “memorises” or “enumerates”. Scholars explain it as a fuller meaning: to learn the names, to understand them, and to call upon Allah by them and live by them. Ibn al-Qayyim described these levels in Bada’i’ al-Fawa’id.

How do I call upon Allah by His names?

Allah says, “To Allah belong the most beautiful names, so call upon Him by them” (Quran 7:180). Choose the name that matches your need, for example Al-Ghaffar when asking forgiveness or Ar-Razzaq when asking for provision, and then ask. The finder on this page suggests names for common needs.

Is there a number of times I must repeat a name?

We do not give any fixed count. Authentic texts tell us to call upon Allah by His names and to learn them, and we do not attach promises to a number of repetitions that are not in those texts.

What is the difference between the Names and the Attributes?

A name, such as Al-‘Alim (The All-Knowing), points to an attribute, here knowledge. Scholars discuss how names, attributes and actions relate. For a deeper study, ask a qualified teacher.

What is the best way to learn the 99 Names?

Learn a few at a time, say them aloud with the meaning, and use them in your du’a. The planner on this page covers all 99 names in 33 days, three each day.

Can children learn the 99 Names?

Yes. Children can learn them slowly, a few at a time, with the meaning in simple words. If a child cannot yet read Arabic, start with Noorani Qaida so they can read the names themselves.

Can I get a teacher to help me read the names correctly?

Yes. Ayat Way teaches Quran reading and Tajweed live and one-to-one in the UK. Your first lesson is a free trial.
