How the Quran speaks to the Prophet ﷺ
The Quran mentions the name Muhammad four times (3:144, 33:40, 47:2, 48:29) and Ahmad once (61:6). When Allah speaks to him directly, He calls him by titles of honour, not by his given name.
Allah also tells the believers to send blessings and peace upon the Prophet ﷺ (Quran 33:56).
Why the count differs: 99, 201 or more
There is no single agreed number of the Prophet's ﷺ names. Here is why, in three points.
Names in the Quran and sahih hadith
Muhammad and Ahmad are in the Quran. The hadith in Bukhari 3532 gives five names, and Sahih Muslim 2355 gives more. These are the safest starting point.
Titles and descriptions
The Quran also describes him as witness, bearer of glad tidings, warner and shining lamp. Some scholars count these as names, and others call them titles.
Classical compilations
Later scholars collected many more names and titles. Some books list 99, one attributed to Imam al-Jazuli lists 201, and others list more. The count depends on what the author counts as a name.
How this page decides
We list names from the Quran and sahih hadith first. Then Quranic titles, then classical titles, each marked as such. This page gathers 99 entries, but they are of different kinds: given names, names from sahih hadith, descriptions in the Quran, and classical titles. We do not say that all 99 are names in the strict sense, or that this is every name. The label on each card tells you which kind it is. For a fuller study, see the explanation of scholars in books such as ash-Shifa by Qadi ‘Iyad.
Learn to read them, with a teacher
If you or your child cannot yet read these names in Arabic, a live one-to-one teacher can help you read each one correctly.
- Noorani Qaida for the letters and sounds.
- Tajweed for the rules of reading.

Names of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ: your questions
What are the names of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ?
The Quran names him Muhammad and Ahmad. In Sahih al-Bukhari 3532 he said he has five names: Muhammad, Ahmad, al-Mahi, al-Hashir and al-‘Aqib. Sahih Muslim 2355 adds names such as al-Muqaffi, Nabi at-Tawbah and Nabi ar-Rahmah.
Did the Prophet ﷺ have 99 names?
There is no single agreed number. Some books list 99 names, one collection attributed to Imam al-Jazuli lists 201, and others list more. Scholars differ over which names and titles count as names, so we show each one with its source and its type.
What is the difference between a name and a title?
A name, such as Muhammad or Ahmad, identifies the person. A title or description, such as “the Warner” or “the Seal of the Prophets”, describes his role or qualities. Scholars do not all draw the line in the same place.
What do Muhammad and Ahmad mean?
Muhammad means the one who is praised again and again. Ahmad means the one who is most praiseworthy, or who praises Allah the most. Muhammad is mentioned by name four times in the Quran (3:144, 33:40, 47:2 and 48:29), and Ahmad once (61:6).
Does the Quran call the Prophet ﷺ by his name?
The Quran mentions the name Muhammad four times, but when Allah speaks to him directly, He addresses him by honoured titles such as “O Prophet” (Ya ayyuhan-Nabi) and “O Messenger” (Ya ayyuhar-Rasul).
Why do we say “sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam”?
Allah says that He and His angels send blessings upon the Prophet, and tells the believers to send blessings and peace upon him (Quran 33:56). The sign ﷺ stands for these words.
Are Ta-Ha and Ya-Sin names of the Prophet ﷺ?
Some people say so, but scholars differ. Many say they are disconnected letters at the start of surahs, so we do not list them as names. Ask a qualified scholar if you want to study this.
Where do the Urdu and English meanings come from?
They are short meanings written for this page from the Arabic words, with the source shown on each card. A fuller explanation belongs to the books of Seerah and the explanations of the Quran. Ask a teacher for deeper study.
Can children learn the names of the Prophet ﷺ?
Yes. Children can start with the five names from the hadith, with the meanings in simple words, and add more over time.
Can a teacher help me read these names?
Yes. Ayat Way teaches Quran reading and Tajweed live and one-to-one in the UK. Your first lesson is a free trial.
