Noorani Qaida and Arabic reading

What Is Noorani Qaida and What Does It Teach?

Short answer

Noorani Qaida is a beginner’s primer for learning to read the Arabic of the Quran. It starts with the letters and their sounds, then adds short vowels, joining and a few reading signs, so a learner can read words and verses with a teacher.

What the word means in practice

People use “Qaida” for a small first book of reading. It is not a book of rules about belief. Its job is practical: to turn Arabic letters into sounds you can read aloud.

What it teaches, in a usual order

  1. The lettersEach letter, its name and its sound, usually in the order of where in the mouth it is said.
  2. Short vowelsThe marks that give a letter its sound, such as “ba”, “bi” and “bu”.
  3. Joining lettersLetters change shape when they join, so you read real words, not single letters.
  4. Longer sounds and other signsLong vowels, the sign for no vowel, the sign that doubles a letter, and the “n” endings.
  5. Reading short passagesThe learner reads lines and short phrases, with the teacher correcting each mistake.

Editions of the book differ. The order and the number of lessons are not the same in every edition, so ask your teacher which one they use.

Who it is for

Children who are new to Arabic, adults who never learned to read it, and anyone who reads slowly and wants to rebuild the basics. A learner who already reads fluently does not need to start here.

What usually comes after

Once the learner reads the book smoothly, teachers usually move to reading from the Quran itself, then add Tajweed (the rules of correct recitation) or memorisation. The order depends on the learner and the teacher.

How to know you are ready to move on

  • You read a line without stopping at every letter.
  • You can tell the three short vowels apart by ear.
  • You can read joined letters without sounding them out one by one.

Questions people ask

Is Noorani Qaida only for children?

No. Adults who are new to Arabic use it too. The book is the same, and the teacher adjusts the pace.

Can I learn it without a teacher?

You can practise from a book, but a teacher hears sounds you cannot check yourself. That is why most learners study it with one.

How many lessons does it have?

It depends on the edition, so there is no single number. Your teacher can tell you the plan for the edition you use.

This is a learning guide, not a religious ruling. For rulings, ask a qualified teacher or scholar.
