There is no one age that suits every child. Readiness matters more than the number: a child who can sit for a short time, copy sounds and enjoy a simple routine can usually begin gentle reading lessons.
Signs a child may be ready
- Sits happily for a short, calm activity.
- Copies sounds and words after you.
- Is curious about letters and books.
- Follows a simple instruction from a teacher.
Starting gently with younger children
For young children, begin with listening and repeating, and with the shapes and sounds of letters. Keep each session short and let a parent stay close. The aim is to make the first experience warm, not tiring.
A parent can help the first lessons
Sitting beside a young child helps them settle and helps the parent learn what the teacher is asking. At Ayat Way, a parent sits beside children aged 4 and 5.
This page is about readiness for reading lessons. Questions about religious duties at a certain age should go to a qualified scholar, not a learning guide.
If a child is not ready yet
Waiting a few months is fine. Meanwhile you can listen to recitation together, read short duas aloud and let the child see you reading.
Questions people ask
Is there a minimum age?
Our own lessons start from age 4. Other teachers set their own. Readiness matters more than the number.
Should a child start with the Quran or a Qaida?
Most beginners start with a Qaida to learn letters and vowels, then move to the Quran.
